A little disappointing January 6, 2009 kands6191 (Plainfield, IL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought these to use on a cruise ship. Our cousin used the same model on a Carnival cruise and they worked great for him. We took them on the Freedom of the Seas which is currently the largest cruise ship and we were disappointed. They only worked occasionally. After the second day we stopped carrying them around. I understand that it is a large ship with a lot of structure for the signal to go through, but what we couldn't understand was why they would work only half the time when we used them in the exact same location. At one point my daughter was looking down at us from our room 3 stories up and we were talking on to her on these and she wasn't getting the signal. But at another time they worked from the same location. We tried making sure they were fully charged, but still didn't have good luck. We did hear other people though.
Nice radio, cheap batteries. December 31, 2008 S. Taylor (Carmel, IN United States) These are good radios for the price. We get good reception around our neighborhood and when we are hiking in the forest. BUT the included batteries are terrible. You will most likely have to discard them and replace them with better quality rechargables.
Works well enough as a toy. Still Cheap. December 28, 2008 James A. Bunch (Central Illinois) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, we finally got ours to work. Instructions are very limited, found more information in amazon reviews than the instruction manual or cobra.com. We thought our radios had charged overnight but did not have plugged in all the way (difficult to insert.) I can not verify the range, it works fine in and around the house. Will test range later. Of the many channels only a few worked for ours (channels 8 - 14 are all you are allowed to use anyway.)
Size is right for small pockets and lightweight enough for the smallest of children. Better than the cheap toy brands we have had in the past. Judging by other reviews, these are fine as toys. However, if you NEED a radio that works well at distances, you may be better off spending the money for better quality.
P.S. Some radios are said to contain lead, no mention of lead contained in packaging or the product on this model.
Need to be replaced or retuned - thorough disappointment December 26, 2008 A Normal Person (Somewhere in the USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just bought these for my son for Christmas. Charged them overnight (13 hours) of the recommended 15 hours ("to fully charge") as listed in the instructions. The batteries showed less than or about a 1/3rd charge upon turning on. His lasted about 2 minutes before the battery went to almost zero charge. Mine was still holding some charge. So either the battery charger is not working correctly or the batteries they supplied are not good or the units are bad. Called their customer support (773-889-3087) as indicated in the instructions (which may or may not be open today, Friday, Dec 26) and it automatically 'answers' and then plays a recorded message telling you to call back and press 2 then 1 for automated help. No agent available. If they are closed today, there should be an automated message stating so and you should still have the option of going through the automated system. At this stage, I want either a new set of rechargeable batteries, a new battery charger, or a new set of '2 way radios.' Thorough disappointment and waste of money at this stage. Not sure if Amazon will take them back, send a replacement set, and send these back to Cobra yet either. My opinion is they may or may not be a product that does what advertised. But as for customer service, there may or may not be any.
Works great.........in a short space December 15, 2008 AL.W PITTMAN (anderson, in United States) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I own a tri-level house, My wife's office is on the third level, mine on the ground floor, I have a very bad left knee, hardly wants to bend making stairs a very difficult trip, tried using our cell phones, wow!, too expensive!, yelling makes us nervous and almost unintelligible, so we have tried this Cobra PR-190-2VP microtalk 2-way radio, well it works just fine for this limited use and as long as it does that, I will be happy, the sound is very clear and is very easy to use, the batteries are NO GOOD!, two would take not even the slightest charge, found some name brand on sale at a nationally know "drug store", they were already charged so there was no lag time, my advise is to get the batteries first, buy the radio and throw the cheap batteries away!
